Average riders v Top riders

A number of people are saying that, because we based the standard on the top 10% of riders,  it ignores the average rider and, what's more, it is disadvantageous to the average rider.

In fact completely the opposite is true.  If we had based the standard on average riders there would have been less decline with age and all older riders would have been at a disadvantage.

The following graph illustrates the point.  It shows speeds at 25 miles for all riders - the vertical axis is speed (mph) and the horizontal axis is age (years).

Age records 1925-1946 - This was added in response to a query on Timetrialling Forum.  The pre-1943 records would have been information available to EH Strevens at the time he devised the standards.
